Once in a Generation Opportunity

Because of drastic state budget cuts throughout the country and anachronistic rules regarding seniority and tenure, exacerbated by "last in, first out" policies, many of America's finest and most motivated, innovative and energetic teachers are finding themselves out of work.

As one of only three states in the union with a balanced budget or surplus, Arkansas is in an historic position to put out a welcome mat to these teachers and recruit their talents to our state. At the very least, we should signal to the country that Arkansas' priority is the education of all students with the finest teachers possible.

However, with the 78th highest starting teachers' salaries in the state, Little Rock has little chance of competing for this potential windfall of talent. And so it goes.
