A Champion Emerges

By today's March 7th deadline, Representative Barry Hyde (D-40) of North Little Rock has filed a shell bill - HB 2140 - "AN ACT TO AMEND THE PROVISIONS OF THE ARKANSAS CODE CONCERNING THE ELECTION OF SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS FROM ZONES; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES."

The bill will eventually provide for: 1) recall of school board members, 2) changing of school elections from September to the higher voter turnout primary in March, and 3) empowerment of citizens, not incumbent boards, to determine, by election, what type of zone representation their district will have (in compliance with the Voting Rights Act) - five zones, seven zones or five zones and two at-large.

Please contact Representative Hyde to thank him for his leadership in empowering the citizens to govern their respective public school districts. Then, contact your, and/or any other representative you know, to seek their co-sponsorship of this good government, fiscally responsible legislation. Strong opposition is already lining up from those most affected by empowering the people - incumbent school board members, administrators, teachers union and their supporters. Together, citizens and parents can stand up to those opposed to progressive reform and ensure that our elected officials finally put students first in our public schools.
